It is an over-reaction because Feaster appears to be doing his job very competently as of late. To hold on to decisions that were made months ago, and to ignore the several positive actions made more recently is foolish. To fire Feaster NOW for things that he did months ago is an over-reaction.

This depends entirely upon what sort of opportunity was actually present. For whatever reason, not all NHL general managers are privy—through no fault of their own—to every deal or every potential deal that occurs. It's easy for us to in retrospect insist upon what Feaster should or should not have done, but you simply do not know all the circumstances behind the trades, nor the level of the Flames' involvement in either.

It's not like Feaster went out and signed a Tim Thomas to a one year deal, he went after Ramo and signed him to a two year deal thinking he can hold the team over or become the #1 goalie the team needed. Feaster's decision isn't looking good at all and this was a very predictable result.

The calculated gamble is that what is happening in the Flames goal NOW is not very important in the long run. If Gillies and Ortio are ready to play in the NHL next years as they appear they might be, then having Ramo, Berra, Bernier/Bishop, and MacDonald all in the organisation IS a problem, and one with longer term consequences.
Furthermore, Feaster did not choose Ramo and Berra over one of Bishop or Bernier. They were already Flames property when the other trades were made, so you can hardly make a point that this was an actual decision to be made.
In the end, this is a pretty silly thing from which to demand Feaster's head.
