I think he just shot himself to make it look like there was struggle.
I have a feeling that Libby will live. She was shot where she was holding a pillow. It wouldn't surprise me if something was underneath it.
As for the other girl, if you ever check out the Lost forums, someone said a while ago that the producers and some of the actors couldn't get along with her, and that they would kill her off as soon as the story allowed.
