Here's a story about taking things a little too seriously . . . . in cricket.
When David Frith came to write his study of cricket suicides, By His Own Hand, he emphasised the fact that the incidence of suicide among Test cricketers was much higher than average suicide rates. The book covered 80 suicides: just over 10 years later he was moved to update it, having come upon a further 70. Discussing his conclusions with this newspaper later, Frith explained that "cricket, because it is so monopolistic, because it swallows you up before spitting you out, because it enfolds you and plays on the mind, filling you with confusion and self-doubt, is by far the major sport for suicides".
