I'm sure when it started in 1919 and the sheer loss of life was still entrenched in everybody's mind it was meant as solemn occasion. But now it reeks of patriotism and gallantry. Gold-trimmed flags, polished metals, freshly pressed uniforms. It's a big blusterous show of jingoism.
The whole white poppy controversy is also evidence. Even if you don't realize it, the poppy is a huge national symbol. A Canadian poem that appears on our currency. The white poppy doesn't have any patriotic implications.
