I unlocked the bootloader right away, which definitely wiped it, but didn't proceed to make backups or root. If i decide to do those at a later date, does it need to be wiped first?

Unlocking your bootloader usually wipes your phone. You can do an Android backup and through the Nexus toolkit and it'll back up all your apps and settings though so it's not too much work to restore afterwards
