Smid's value does not go up a whole lot at the trade deadline.
the concept of value going up at the trade deadline is that a team can get a 3.5 M player that fits under their cap for less than a Million cap hit (1/4) of a season.
In Smid's case the team has to deal with his next 3 years at 3.5M.
Smid's highest value will be the week after the UFA opens. The teams that lost out on the top UFA D-men and still have their cap space would likely appreciate Smid at 3.5M.
right now the Flames were one of 6 teams that had the 3.5 cap space sitting around waiting for Smid.
The Flames still have a lot of cap space to mess with Edmonton by keep any other teams salary dump competitive. For instance if the Flyers want to salary dump someone like Luke Schenn or Coburn they would check with the Flames before they accepted the Edmonton offer.
