Smid on the trade'

Smid had been leading the Oilers in hits (52) and blocked shots (34) — and, yes, he is already a wearer of (Flames-mandated) ankle guards.

“I don’t think I could play without them,” chuckled Smid, who’s expected to add much-needed sandpaper to Calgary’s blue line. “I hope that’s why they got me. I’m going to work really hard for that team. Hopefully, I can get the respect from the new teammates.”

Perhaps Burke, the Flames’ president of hockey operations, had a say in Friday’s trade?

“You’re going to have to ask him,” said Smid, laughing. “He knows me from Anaheim, but that’s really a question for him.”

“Obviously, I was in shock for a while,” said Smid. “It was a lot of mixed feelings ... but I talked to my wife. She’s excited. I’m excited. We are focused on a new beginning with a new organization. Just pumped to join the Flames.”
