Calgary Flames hook up with Edmonton Oilers for trade

“I don’t know how many trades there have been in the past between Edmonton and Calgary. I don’t think very many,” said Smid, the rugged defenceman who was acquired Friday by the Calgary Flames after spending the past seven seasons and change up the QEII Highway with the Edmonton Oilers.

“If somebody told me yesterday that I would be traded to Calgary, I would have been like, ‘Wow, you’ve gotta be crazy.’ But I guess it does happen. I was in shock ... But now I’m really, really excited.”

“I’ve watched Calgary and I think the rebuild is going pretty well,” Smid said. “They’ve been playing really well and they work really, really hard and it looks like they have a great group of guys. I’m really, really excited to join that group.”
