It's actually true. I think 2 of the past 4 years without playoffs, we were in the top 16 for points league-wide, but screwed out of a berth because of being in the more competitive conference. Flames would be a perrennial 6-8 seed playoff team in the east with Feaster/Sutter's previous "patch the ship" approach. Which would be good but also would be negative for cup aspirations, as I think we would settle for mere playoff appearances, yet we would never be able to get out of the first or second round anyways.
In the big, big picture in the overall scheme of things, this will make us a better club. When we can finally compete well enough to crack the top couple teams in the toughest division in the entire league, we'll be a team to be reckoned with. And if the playoff/division setup ever changes, we'll be better for it, too.
It sucks that even being a .500 would leave us far enough behind other teams in the divison that playoffs hopes will be all but non existent not even half way into the season, but we've got see through the frustration and impatience to what this will force us to do to truly become a Great team, not just a fringe playoff team.
