I really like the deal even though I am a big Horak supporter. I still think Horak has 3rd maybe even 2nd line potential. I do agree with the posters who say our depth allows us to deal him with guys like Knight and Reinhart close and Backlund, Colborne and Monahan on the team.

In Smid we get a guy who I've liked when I watched the Oil. He's a defensive D-man but I think he could be able to play a bigger role than Sarich, Warrener and O'Brien had/have. Our defense badly needed another guy who could play top 4 if needed and has some size and defensive ability. Smid isn't a big hitter but when I've watched him he has more sandpaper to his game than I thought he did.

Brossoit I thought was the most expendable of our goalie prospects. Without looking it up I think I had him as our lowest ranked goalie when I made my list in a prospect thread this summer. Obviously he's still got a lot of potential and I think he's a decent prospect but after Ortio's year last year, Gillies' year last year and the more mature Berra and Ramo I think we just didn't really have room for Laurent.

Roy I'm not a big fan of from when I've watched him in junior. I didn't think his style and size combination is one that translates easily to the NHL. So for me that part of the deal is a definite downgrade as I like Brossoit considerably more than Roy. I'm a big believer in size being a massive plus in goal. Gillies and Berra are my favourites of our bunch

We traded two expendable prospects at positions we were fairly deep in. And this coming from a Horak fan who still likes him quite a bit. I think he'll do well in Edmonton. But I think we got tremendous value for Horak in Smid. And we traded for the position that we were immediately weakest in.

Obviously the bonus is that the Oil are weak on defense as well so dealing Smid seems to make them immediately worse. Seems Bryzgalov could upgrade their tending but their defense presumably needs a shakeup as well. My boss thinks a forward for defense trade is on the horizon for the Oil.

I like that we didn't give up any picks. Gonna be interesting to ask my Oilers friend what he thinks of it.
