The team seems to have been in win-now mode the entire time, dating back to drafting Monohan (We need a player who can play in the NHL next season)... why?
Cant we suck for 2-5 years and then go into win-now mode?
Very frustrating that they would make a short-sighted move to bandage the Giordano injury when we could have promoted from within.

You might have a point if Calgary had traded some draft picks for Smid, but they traded two players that may or may not have what it takes to stick in the NHL for a player that is already NHL caliber. And he's a quality young defenceman (which Calgary desperately needs) signed to a very reasonable contract. There is nothing short sighted about this move, it's exactly what any rebuilding team should do if given the chance
From an Oilers perspective however it's ridiculous, that team has zero direction
