CALGARY, AB -- The Calgary Flames announced today that they have acquired defenceman Ladislav Smid and goaltender Olivier Roy from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for forward Roman Horak and goaltender Laurent Brossoit.
Smid was originally drafted in the first round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, ninth overall, by the Anaheim Ducks. He was acquired by Edmonton on July 3, 2006, with Joffrey Lupul and draft picks in exchange for defenceman Chris Pronger. Smid has played 474 games in the NHL recording 65 points and 391 penalty minutes. The 6-foot-3, 209-pound rearguard has become known has one of the league’s top shot blockers and typically plays against the opponents top offensive players.
