I don't think he had as much of a chance to succeed. He produced 17 points in 39 games and only had an ATOI of 13 minutes which in my opinion is pretty good considering he started his NHL as a "rookie" and for many parts of the season played on the 4th line. I think part of the problem with the flames is they advertise a merit system but in actual reality it only applies to certain players.
