People in real life, even trustworthy people, tell lies all the time. Some people do it to protect themselves, some do it to protect others. Some just lie for the sake of lying. The idea of Rick lying isn't out of the question here. Hell, it's par for the course, seeing as how long he kept the fact that he killed Shane secret, among other things.

Actually he told the group about Shane right away. Rick kills Shane at the end of that episode, and then after they escape the walkers and the farm and people start to think they should split up Rick tells them all he killed Shane.
