This is a logical position but it does not reflect reality.
Do you know how difficult it is for artists to "stand up to their label?" For the vast majority of artists, the label they're on is their one chance, their lifeline. Saying "no" to that is like quitting your dream job because you don't like your boss.
Until the stranglehold grip record companies have over music and artists is abolished completely, downloading hurts artists as much as it does the companies. You may be "sticking it to the man" but you're sticking it to the people who make the music you love to. Poison the well at your peril.
