Basically with the new CBA teams won't let good players go as UFAs since they know they can't plug those holes with other UFAs, which in turn means good players will almost never go UFA.
So the Leafs basically need to sign him. Let's face it he's a run-of-the-mill 40 point defenseman who is average defensively, logs big minutes and has a physical side. He isn't worth close to $7 million/year but he'll likely get his 6.5 again simply because the Leafs can't afford to lose him.
Him and Kessel at $15 million/year is going to cripple that organization. Both good players but neither the kind of guy you want to build a team around.
