Outside of 12 games nothing supports the Leafs as an Elite team. In fact they are the test case for advanced stats being valid as every indicator points to them being far worse than they are. So until the end of the season you cannot say the Leafs are an Elite team and to be an elite team they need to make the Conference Finals or finish top 4 in the regular season.
As for Phaneuf I think he is a more physical version of Wideman. So that makes him woth around 6 million per season. I would take him on a 6 year 36 million dollar deal that we gave up no assets for. 7 million and I start to look elsewhere.
