might mean that, but I'm not convinced that we should so cavalierly dismiss the thought that the Islanders could find themselves in a position to pursue keeping Vanek.
I rather see this as precautionary, in the event that Vanek doesn't pan out for them as hoped, or in the case that they do fail to re-sign him. It makes good business sense for a cash-poor but prospect-rich team to make such a deal. Thy need a successful Vanek at this stage much more than the additional pick.
