I didn't think he was struggling either, but I think they're really trying to push Bärtschi so that he doesn't end up in a 2nd-3rd line comfort zone. Now is the time to see if he can be more and they feel this is the best way to help him.
Mikael Granlund was rated slightly below Bärtschi and he spent last season between the AHL and the fourth line with the Wild. It really motivated him to work in the off season. He went nuts with his training and he'll be better off for it in the long run. You don't necessarily want things to be easy.
