You only really have one or two games that you can schedule a good opponent, and it is a crap shoot whether that opponent has a good year or not. Should Alabama have an advantage because Va Tech ended up being ok, while FSU gets punished because Florida lost 3 games?

Conference championships are the only part of the game where each team controls their own destiny and should really be the framework for the NC.
The bolded part is very key. You're 100% right here. For instance Michigan and UCLA just announced a home and home series...in 2022 and 2023. I mean 10 years from now this could be a 1 vs. 2 matchup or a matchup of two bottom feeders in their conference. It's 10 years from now, no way can you predict what the matchup will be in terms of importance. I don't know why they have to schedule these games so far in advanced. I think and especially with the new system there needs to be more flexibility in scheduling.
