If the Flames had Monahan, draft pick from last year, Sven and some other random young guy all looking like they would have 6 million+ deals coming into effect in 5 years maybe then you worry about Monahan having his deal kick in a year early but at this point it seems doubtful it matters whether Monahan gets his money in 2017 or 2018.

It's hardly short term thinking when you're hoping Monahan plays to the level deserving of a 6 million dollar contract. Same with Sven. If the other guys pan out and we're stuck with too many good players? Well then, let's cross that boat at that time.
