Big difference between trading a 1st round pic for a player that has 1 or more years left on his contract and one that has 2 months.

You don't get it. Because of the salary cap pending UFAs are often valued more than players with a contract as a top team, close to the cap can't afford the player on an ongoing basis. A perfect example was Pittsburgh last season.
