Winnipeg is a very underrated place to live, as it's a great place to raise a family, or meet people. I don't care much for Winnipeg winters, but nothing beats summer in Manitoba. Lakes and beaches in every direction. Most people own a cottage for the summer, relatively affordable. Between May and September, there are tons of things to do in terms of festivals, parks, beaches, campgrounds, etc.
If one can tolerate the Winnipeg winter, it's not such a bad place at all.

Summers are irrelevant.
Hockey players are generally only living where they play for the winter. They can live wherever they want in summer.
