One thing about the less desirable cities though, is that if there are openings on the team, they can present ample ice time. If a city like Edmonton is trying to attract UFA's in the summer, I would think that players consider just how much playing time they are going to get. It is a chance for an NHL'er to build a better profile for themselves, and possibly attract more attention / dollars from other teams down the line.
Places like Calgary and Edmonton may be considered stepping stones for some. I have to think someone like Jiri Hudler saw this when he signed here.
