I once wanted to get a blank 70s Mitchell & Ness Sabres jersey customized with Gil Perreault's #11 and not only did they find the perfect colour match, they matched the twill type of the numbers to the logo, they worked with me to get the size and style of the numbers correct and where they should be placed on the sleeves and back. Fantastic experience.
Getting bent out of shape because someone puts something funny or personal on their jersey doesn't make sense to me. They've spent the money, they can do whatever they want. Does it often look kind of ridiculous? Oh my, yes.
I once bought my dad and I similarly matching jerseys with our last name on the back for a hockey road-trip for his 50th birthday. One of the Flames games in New York, a particularly wasted gentleman in the can stopped my dad and went ON (quite seriously) about how amazing XXXXXX was playing tonight. It was fantastic, and since no one on the team wore the number on his jersey, it was even better. The fact that he pronounced our name correctly was incredible...
