You are using a DX camera, which unfortunately reduces your options for a fast wide-angle lens significantly. I do use ad DX camera body (D5100) for light travel and I do have a few DX-lenses, including Nikkor 12-24, which is a heavier and better built lens than a plasticky 10-24. However; I have not used it much lately since acquiring Sigma 8-16. It is an excellent rectilinear super wide-angle lens for a DX camera body and I highly recommend it. It is not very fast, of course.

For rectilinear wide-angle f/2.8, if you really need it, you are into some serious dollars though, unless you are prepared to go manual. I use Nikkor 14-24 for stationary shots and 17-35 for walking. Both are heavy and bulky full-frame lenses. To save a few bucks, you have to be creative and use combos. You can get a cheesy-looking manual Rokinon 14mm 2.8 for $300, which beats a $2800 Zeiss in some tests. Another consideration would be to go for a good fisheye lens, like Sigma 8mm f/3.5 - they are small and lightweight. I keep one in my pocket when walking with a DX-camera.
