I know its very early and we still dont know what this team will play like over 82 games or where they will finish. I think we should begin acquiring picks as soon as teams are willing to let them go. Namely 1st rounders from this upcoming draft and/or the next one.
Currently on our roster, how many players do you think individually are worth a 1st round pick? How about a 2nd? What is Stajan worth roughly? Wideman has been playing well for us and is on a great contract but I wonder what he would return.
Obviously Cammalleri is not playing and will need to bounce back from his injury well to keep his value and reputation deserving of that kind of trade return.
Do you guys feel like it would be worth it to (at some point this season, ie not now) trade 2 or more of these higher value but older players?
I think we should quite simply because they are not irreplaceable in FA and they could fetch some pretty good picks.
My dream scenario is the flames trade Glencross and Cammalleri each for a 1st rounder + maybe a lower value prospect if we can squeeze that in.
If we could end up drafting 6 times in the 1st rounds of the 2013 + 2014 drafts I would say that would be more valuable then the leadership or mentoring / sticking up for the young guys that we would need these older players for.
Another thing is with Gaudreau hopefully turning pro after this season we should clear out at least one spot at LW for him and maybe another for Klimchuk or a UFA/RFA LW.
This would be a major win for the Flames and would put the bad excuse of a hockey club North of us to shame for the way they have drafted and developed the 3 first overall picks they managed in their 'rebuild' (tanking).
I'd even take a cap dump like Liles for 1-3 years in exchange for a 1st or 2nd.
I think we could still avoid tanking and being horrible without scoreface or camel, who have not been a huge part of our surprising start so far.
What do you guys think? Too early? Keep them around for the young players?
I say get as many 1st rounders as we can and dont even think about trading ours.
