She could have wondered about the man she was allowing into her 2 year olds sons life and saw that a year ago he was convicted if beatng a 3 year old and a woman.
He wasn't some sneaky monster that had been getting away with this for awhile or a first time offender with no history.
He had a clear history of violence particularly towards children.
