I have seen plenty of moves made for hockey reasons.
If money dictates every decision no 18 year olds would ever play in NHL and rarely would 19/20 year olds.
If Monahan spends the next few years playing well enough to earn a big contract the Flames will be much better off even if they do have to pay him 6+ million a year early.
