Is Bates character a witch or was that poison some sort of drug to have her die and then awake buried alive for eternity?

[spoiler]I don't know if she was a witch as much as she was a sadist who believed in witch rituals. I'm making the assumption that the potion that she drank was like a zombie poison that somehow extended her life. The fact that she was chained and bound and gagged tells me that the intent was eternal punishment.
