First of all it bridges the gap between movies while finally ending Luke. We have a credible new force threat. We have a massive military threat in the mandolores or pirates.
We can get Han and Leia involved in a attempt to redeem the new Sith.

I think you just ripped off the entire expanded universe storyline but replaced Han/Leia's son (Jacen Solo) with Ben Skywalker as the one that goes bad and kills everybody.
