I really don't know anything about the expanded universe except for bits and pieces because it's never interested me but with so much established canon, and with a lot of it established by Lucas' official input, do the producers have to go that route? If they are hand-cuffed by that universe, then all the plot points would already be known.

Can they just scrap all the expanded universe and Lucas's meddling for the past 30 years and come up with an all-new story for Star Wars?

Let's just reboot the damn thing too while we're at it and do it properly.
