I keep going through scenarios in Star Wars and especially the new movies, I really think jumping right into a hidden evil Sith, or Palpatine returning as a ghost or Palpatines master as the villian would just be eye rolling and basically take a big crap on everything that the OT illustrated, and even the PT laid out. It would make Anakin's redemption nearly pointless in the grand scheme of things.
I really believe that the villian in the first movie needs to be something ordinary but overwhelming. A pirate threat, or to borrow from the OR era, the Mandolores reborn conquoring planet after planet. Maybe the Jedi don't see it as something they should be involved in, this doesn't involve force users, and the last time that the Jedi joined a war they were betrayed and cast down.
Maybe you introduce Ben Skywalker or another young Jedi Knight who has a disagreement with Luke's peace at all costs message and stay out of the war message. They want to do the right thing which is stop the killing and they should be using their power to enforce the peace not just talk about it.
Maybe this Ben Skywalker and Jaina Solo goto war against the Mandolore's or pirates or whatever in a losing cause, then they vanish.
Of course Luke goes out to find them, at some point he arrives at Korriban and heads to an ancient temple and he walks in and finds his son and his niece. Ben starts to argue that he's doing what has to be done to bring peace to the Galaxy. Luke argues that there's limits and the force is screaming that Ben's way isn't the way. Tempers flair and a massive light sabre fight erupts between Luke and his son while his niece Jaina watches with interest. At first its a normal fight then suddenly Ben is throwing lightning and he's clearly stronger and faster then his day (we can have a training fight at the start of the movie where Luke easily over powers his son).
Suddenly Luke is battered down, Ben takes his sword arm and Luke looks up at his son with a pleading look on his face and asks his son why. Ben calmly responds that he's going to bring peace and justice and security to a galaxy that has never seen it. And to do it he must do horrible things. Then he rams Luke through the chest with his light saber.
Then Ben And Jaina go and kneel in front of a Sith Holocron that flickers to life with the image of Palpatine, not Sideous but Palpatine who starts speaking "As I told you my friends sometimes you have to do horrible things and sacrifice the ones you love to bring true order to the galaxy. You must ruthlessly stamp out people that don't have the same goal of peace and justice as you. I believe I have given you all of the training that you need to reach your goals" Then Palpatine vanishes and Ben looks up with slightly yellowed eyed, and Jaina looks at him with even yellower eyes and a peaceful smile and says "Come my apprentice we have much to do"
Then the credits roll.
First of all it bridges the gap between movies while finally ending Luke. We have a credible new force threat. We have a massive military threat in the mandolores or pirates.
We can get Han and Leia involved in a attempt to redeem the new Sith.
Maybe we can fit in another Jedi who's unsure of himself who becomes the new Trilogy hero.
We only need one or two major battles (actually slaughters)
Where does Ben Kenobi come into play. Maybe he appears in a Holocron, maybe he appears to Luke before he goes on his mission to find his son with a dire warning.
Palpatine can still show up in the Sith Holocron to give advice, laugh evilly and all that.
I would love to have a scene where Han comes home from work and goes to kiss Leia as he walks across a wookie carpet (goes back to can you get this walking carpet out of my way)
One of the first things that the new Sith do in the second movie is end the Ewok infestation of the Galaxy forever.
This story would borrow literally from the Darth Reven storyline as well.
