Star Wars was interesting in 1977 because Lucas was taking his childhood memories of great classic black & white action/adventure serials and creating a science fiction film based on those classic Hollywood films. That's where you get scrolling text intro, that's why you get the screen wipes, that's why you have swashbuckling heroes doing sword fights, that's why you have Millennium Falcon ball turret sequences (homage to WWII bomber films), etc. It was an homage to what he was a fan of in his childhood put into a new and different setting. It's the same story with Indiana Jones.

All the new movies have lost that original creative spirit and instead of working with that classic romantic action/adventure archetype, their goal was to build off the original trilogy and it's lore. That's where they are falling short because all they are doing is aping the overwrought tropes of Star Wars over and over again so everything looks like a pale imitation or a failed attempt at fan service. The prequels were too fanatical about building a history and continuity for the series so we got a bunch boring sequences about politics mixed in with characters designed to sell the franchise to children and it was a horrible mess. Then just to prove that they were more concerned with lore and continuity than actually creating strong characters and stories, all they did was dilute it all by reverse editing the original movies to fit in with the new prequel lore.
