I didn't like his coaching style last year. Even if the mandate was to win now the leash he put on the young guys was closer to a noose, which was terrible considering no vet had a leash at all. I've soured on him after his treatment of Baertschi. You just have to look north to see what giving young players free range results in but the exact opposite happened with Baertschi. Give him 4th line duties and if anyone on the line makes a mistake that's it for the period? There were several times last year that Begin took a stupid and completely on himself penalty that resulted in his line's last shift that game. Benching rookies because of a well past his prime 35 years old's mistake? Uggh.
Okay fine, apparently we've entered the rebuild now and the rules have changed for him. I'll believe it when I see it, but Baertschi has twice in 3 games gotten half the time as Glencross despite looking no worse. Maybe he took a step in the right direction yesterday when Baertschi and Monahan saw over 13 minutes of ice time but that's still a long ways to go. Other teams, some with arguably much better depth, haven't had issues giving 16 minutes of ice time to rookies and actually play them on the PP. Baertschi and Monahan's only time on the PP has seem to be relegated to the very tail end of it when the 26 year old Street gets to see 2 minutes of actual PP time a night lately. Not a fan of that decision.
However, it's 3 games in. If the rookies keep up their play maybe they'll get to see the ice-time more. However, if they continue to be relegated to under 15 minutes I'm going to continue with my belief he's not good with the young players which stemmed from game 1 of his coaching career with the Flames when Brodie was sat.
As for his coaching style. The effort by the team is there, even I can admit that Hartley is probably playing a big factor in that, he might even have a good system. I just don't think his decision making is great. Butler's struggling defensively in a tie-game? Just had a terrible shift? Let's keep him out ther...oh the Canucks just scored, who saw that coming? Everyone but Hartley apparently.
