For 40 years, from the mid 1920s through the mid 1960s, there was a wood treatment plant on the edge of the Bow River west of downtown (currently where Renfrew Chrysler and GSL Chev-City are). During that time, chemicals used in the treatment seeped into the soil, contaminating the land.
