I know they've been bad to mediocre for an eternity, but the new regime had a lot of jettisoning of terrible deals without the luxury of cap expenditure to work with. The current group started with Tavares and they built around him. Granted there are still some big pieces missing long term, and maybe it could have happened sooner, but they have a good young core right now to work with and it's also been done on the cheap.
They are now poised to be a good team for years to come if they acquire a good young goaltender and 1-2 more forwards and maybe one more defenseman.
If they also move to Brooklyn the income issues they have will likely go away and they will be able to afford some bigger name free agents to fill in the blanks.
I'm just saying they did a good job of assembling a young talented core without breaking the bank and giving them the opportunity to get to the next level quickly. It's something I hope the Flames can replicate, but maybe much more quickly.
