They still need some of their prospects to join the team soon (De Haan, Strome, Kabanov) but that is a team headed in the right direction with a ton of money to burn. Goaltending needs to be sorted out long term after Nabokov, so there is a hole to fill. Still, John Tavares at 5.5 million is an absolute steal.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you do a rebuild.
There is nothing good about the Islanders rebuild. They might be in a reasonable place now after being terrible forever but they are still only a bubble playoff team, not a contender for the cup.

They have had so many terrible moves over the last 15 years that if a good GM had been running things they likely would have had a superstar team throughout most of the last 10 years.

Just skimming through their transactions they could have had:
Luongo & Jokinen instead of Kvasha & Parrish
Heatley / Gaborik first overall in the 2000 draft instead of DiPietro
Chara, Spezza and Muckalt instead of Yashin (whom they ended up buying out and are still paying for)

Snow's track record is barely better. I'd say that the only reason the Islanders are in as good of a spot as they are in now is mainly because they have been so bad for such a long time and have had so many draft picks that it is almost inevitable that they would come out with a pile of good players that they couldn't screw up. They are still trying though, just look at the Nino Niederreiter situation.

Yeah... I want nothing to do with that type of rebuild.
