Getting back to my 12 year old, he is is extremely vexed that he is not allowed to play GTAV. He says all his friends are playing it, which I found hard to believe. He showed me his friends' game collections on XBox, and it does appear that many of his friends are playing this game. And that is the problem - he feels left out and feels a great deal of peer pressure.

I have read many parent guides like this one (which do not recommend this game for kids):

My son says if he did not play the missions, he would avoid the most mature content. Is there a way to turn down the gore and violence in the settings? If I supervised him when he played, can I be confident he won't see mature content? Are there safe areas of the game outside the story mode?

I don't know much about these games, and whether the worst content can be avoided. As parents, we think it is our duty to prohibit this game. Is it true many kids his age are really playing this game?
