You need to remember than 2010 was not that long ago, where Tea Party candidates won in pretty convincing numbers in many areas. It will take a while for the moderate right-wing voter to realize that it won't be getting better than that for a long time.
Money in politics will prevent that from happening. As long as unlimited special interest money flows through political party koffers via SuperPACs (as a result of citizens united), we will never see a moderation of the GOP.
