I suspect the majority of the Republican party is moderate, but they are not the vocal part right now. Eventually, that will come back and bite them in the butt in a way that will make them actually address the nut job factor, but as long as they think this is their path back into power, they will be hard to convince otherwise.
You need to remember than 2010 was not that long ago, where Tea Party candidates won in pretty convincing numbers in many areas. It will take a while for the moderate right-wing voter to realize that it won't be getting better than that for a long time.

So, all the normal Republicans, are the quiet ones, so quiet, you actually never even knew they existed, weird. The only Repub, I have any kind of respect for is Chris Christie. He seems like he genuinely cares about his constituents and is not in politics to push his personal agendas. Otherwise, just look at the GOP leader finalists, they're all beyond nuts.
