funny you should mention the backpacking/hostel thing.
A comparison was done and it was cheaper to do the tour than to do the same thing backbacking/hostel thing. In the tour most meals and accommodations are included. I think it worked out to about 25.00/day cheaper.

the same tour company also does tours of the USA and Canada. And again, this tour company only deals with adults aged 18-35. great way to meet some new people!
