Who have the Oilers missed out on signing because of those deals? Who have the Oilers had to let go because of salary cap concerns because of those guys?
The ELC concern is overblown. If Monahan plays well enough to earn a big contract then that will be a positive for the Flames going forward. They are highly unlikely to be in a situation where one year is going to make any difference on his contract.
The Flames need to be making decisions based 100% on what is best for his development and not concerned about Monahan being so good that we have to pay him big money one year earlier.
