Met an old fellow at the Museum of the Regiments who went ashore at Dieppe. He was in the Calgary Tanks, number 5 I think he said. Never made it off the beach, eventually captured.
His story of that day, and the years of captivity was amazing.
90 -92 years old I think he said he was, and he could still do the punishment he endured daily. Face a wall, go up on your tiptoes and put your chin against a wall. Then stay there for an hour. If his heels touched ground, or his chin left the wall, he got a rifle butt in the back, or worse a poke with a bayonet.
This was punishment for taking off his handcuffs/shackles. He said he still took them off every day, just because he could, and it upset the guards.
He was so proud, "see 92 and I can still do it" as he chinned the wall.
