It's a non-issue as far as I'm concerned. The only way it would be an issue is if this were 2008 again and the Flames were in the top 3 spending teams in the league.
Cap space is always an issue.... as is budget and profitability.

If the Flames are 10-15M less than cap this year then Burke has a much better argument to take to ownership when he wants to bury a Kotalik contract in 2-3 years rather than saving $3M by trading Regehr for Butler.

Sieloff's ELC runs out in 4 years. In his last year of ELC the Flames will likely be at or near the cap.

Either they will be getting high paid Veterans (Minnesota) to get to the next level or paying their prospects huge $ like Edmonton.

Two years ago when Winnipeg got back to the NHL they basically announced that they were going have an internal cap 10-15M under the real cap and this year they are 2.3 M below the cap.

They added Setegouchi, Frolik and Jokinen but are paying their former prospects 5M + ..

In 4 years when Sieloff is coming off his ELC I really hope that Baertschi, Brodie and Backlund, Monahan, Gaudreau are looking at 6M+ contracts.

This spring when Gaudreau finally signs he will be having a 3.7 - 4.0 cap hit. He has basically the same leverage as Justin Schultz.

Corban Knight has a 3.7 cap hit.
