I remember playing the franchise modes of the EA NHL and NHL 2K games and a winning strategy was to collect first round picks, draft top-rated prospects and then locking them up into 10 year deals at a rdiculously low rate (~$1M) before they turned into stars.
The Oilers seem to be taking a similar strategy, only they're paying a premium instead.
