Not saying he's a bad player, just mostly average. Nothing about him really stands out for me.

Just to state the obvious - but, the captain of your team does not have to be the most skilled player. If he is someone who works hard, has the respect of the lockerroom, and the ability to communicate with the coach and/or the refs then it really doesn't matter if he is a top line player that is carrying the team to the W or a 3rd line guy who makes his impact through grit and hard work.
Most of what Gio (or any captain) brings to a team is not something that we will see as fans that tune in to watch games and then tune out.
