This is why the Flames need to find a way to compete in 3 seasons while the top picks we draft the next couple years on still on ELCs.
You need to win with your young guys on their ELCs to get the best out of drafting in the early rounds.
Drafting guys in the top 5 usually means they are good enough to warrant big contracts, and those big contracts can kill your cap flexibility.
Need to do it like Chicago. Win with veterans and young guys who are on ELCs, then take a couple years to re-tool and build around the young guys who now have big contracts, then win another cup.
