But Apple is (was?) great at getting to market the polish and spin that made people want their products. No one wanted a phone of that type before that, after Apple but their brilliant polish on it, they did. Similar to the iPad etc.

Apple then set that new bar, a new bar that other companies tried to follow, then catch up, then pass.

Now Apple is the one doing the following and with their latest release it's still all they're doing unfortunately. They've become the Blackberry that their most loyal followers used to mock and torment, they aren't leading the pack anymore.

I hope that wasn't too emotional for you.
I think your biases are showing a tad here. You make it sound like iPhone was just a tweak and a whole lot of marketing spin. Not sure where you were in 2007 but the iPhone was a freaking big deal. As you say it set the bar higher, actually much much higher, and others in time passed it.

You might be right that it is no longer the top phone, but they continue to set the bar in some areas, for example I would argue their hardware engineering is second to none (screen size notwithstanding), and they've just set a new bar for biometric security (have you seen the reviews?).

Are they catching up more than innovating? Probably. But seriously, Blackberry? Blackberry stayed on the old button paradigm 5 years too long, catering to their loyal users who love buttons (like my wife), but were completely unable to compete with buttonless smart phones and lacked the apps, etc. Tell me Apple is this far behind? Really?

As far as polish and spin goes, have you read the reviews on the 5S and 5C? - it's all about polish, Apple does hardware polish like nobody else and that's why people continue to treat it as a premium brand. Blackberry??

iOS7 is not so polished and they still have work to do but it's a start.

Look I get your argument that Apple is behind and playing catch up and all that but you make it sound like they're stuck in the 2000's and on the verge of collapse because they missed some big wave that Android caught or created. I don't see that.
