No. The system did not fail her. There were lots of programs available to her, to avoid the brutal ending to those innocent children She murdered her own children. There is something very, very wrong with a person who does that. I cant believe she was allowed out in the first place.

The mental health system needs help, there is no doubt about that, however there are some actions so unnatural and sick that i think it is short sighted to blame the system for the horrible actions of a very disturbed individual.

The blame here rests with McConnell.

Yes it did fail her.

A forensic psychiatrist who had been working with McConnell at Alberta Hospital testified there was no evidence the drownings were motivated by vindictiveness or malice toward the boys’ father, and that he believed McConnell killed the children as “an extension of her own suicide.”

During an emotional two-week trial in Wetaskiwin in 2012, court heard McConnell had attempted suicide several times throughout her life, beginning when she was 15 and pregnant with her father’s baby. Testifying at her own trial, McConnell told court she had been feeling “pretty much just buried in a load of crap” in the period before the slayings, and was feeling “increasingly overwhelmed and useless.”

She admitted to searching the Internet for information about death by electrocution, starvation, strangulation, hanging and drowning, but said she wanted to only hurt herself.

She was receiving some medical attention, but she had said in the trial herself that she saw nothing for her in the future other than more attempts at suicide,” he said. “That was the state she was in during the trial. I thought she was somewhat improved when I last saw her (in April), but clearly still deeply depressed.”

Dispite all of the above they released her and deported her to Australia. She should never had been released and kept in custody where she could have gotten more treatment. As I said in an earlier post, i'm not suprised to hear she comitted suicide.
